Built In Oven Measurement Guide
A guide for getting your built in oven measurement right
Getting the right measurements for your brand new built in oven is crucial, whether you’re building a new kitchen or simply swapping out old for new. In this post we run through everything to consider when measuring up for a new built in oven, including fitting guides for single and double ovens, and ventilation requirements.
Are All Built In Ovens The Same Size?
One question that we see a lot is “are built in ovens a standard size?”. The answer is both a yes and no. All built in ovens are built to fit into a standard housing unit. This is usually 60cm wide, however, some housing units for single ovens can be 90cm wide. Because of this, all ovens have very similar widths and depths. Oven heights and capacities, on the other hand, can vary.
Oven Measurement Guide
Standard Oven Capacity
The standard oven capacity for an average single oven is 60 litres. This can reach up to 115 litres for larger models. A wider 90cm model will have a larger capacity than a 60cm model. Single ovens with an average capacity of 60 litres are ideal for small to medium-sized families who can cook their meals at one temperature.
Built in double ovens have a bigger capacity average of between 90 and 130 litres. Built under double ovens aren’t quite as large, with an average capacity between 70 litres and 100 litres. Double ovens are great for large families, and meals that require you to cook two things at different temperatures. If you like entertaining for larger groups, a double oven is more suitable for your needs.
Single Oven Measurement Guide
As mentioned above, built in single ovens come in standardised sizes of either 60cm or 90cm wide. This ensures that, regardless of the model you choose, it will fit into an oven housing unit.
You will need to check the height of the model to be sure that your chosen model will fit into your allocated space. Heights will vary more than widths, however single oven heights do tend to average at around 60cm. Single compact ovens have an average height of 45cm.
Because there are two different sizes of standard housing units, you need to know what you’re working with. If you’re replacing an older model, simply measure the height and width and look for a model with the same measurements. If you’re remodelling your kitchen, match the oven dimensions to the new cabinetry dimensions. Most cabinets have a width of 60cm, which will support a standard 60cm wide built in oven.
Double Oven Measurement Guide
The same rules apply to a double oven; the height will be the most important measurement to note down. The width of a double oven will always meet the standardised dimension of 60cm. In general, built in double ovens have a height of approximately 90cm.
Built under double ovens will be a little shorter, with an average height of 70cm. We recommend allowing for a height of up to 75cm if you choose this option.
Built In Oven Ventilation Requirements
Standardised oven cabinets already account for ventilation, so this isn’t something that you should need to worry about. However, if you’d like to check that the requirements are being met, here are the ventilation requirements for a built in oven:
What Size Oven Do I Need?
The size of oven you need will largely depend on the size of the space you have allocated. If you are replacing an existing oven, it will always be easier to replace it with an oven of matching dimensions. Otherwise, you’d likely need to rebuild your existing cabinetry which can be expensive.
If you’re remodelling your kitchen, and your cabinets have not yet been built or finalised, you’ll have much more flexibility of choice. At this point, you’ll be able to choose an oven with a capacity that best suits your needs. As a general rule, these are the ideal oven capacities per household type:
The Ideal Oven Height
When designing your kitchen around a built in oven, you will need to consider the height at which it is installed. For built under models, you don’t get this luxury.
We recommend installing your built in oven so that the display console is at or near the eye level of the person using it the most. This allows you to clearly see the settings, whilst being able to see inside. It will also mean that the oven will not open too high up, which is especially important for safety.
As a further note, you will need to take into account the height of the plinth and under storage when deciding on the oven height from the floor. These are things that your kitchen designer or fitter should be aware of and should be able to offer tailored advice.
