10 Great Ideas To Help Keep Your Kitchen Organised

Keeping your kitchen clean and presentable can sometimes prove more difficult than it sounds. For when life gets away with you, here are 10 ways you could elevate your kitchen organisation for a clutter and stress-free space.

1. Declutter!

Before you decide to raid B&M, take some time to check out your current kitchen situation. Start by disposing of your expired foods and cleaning products, then take a look at your crockery. If you see any major cracks or chips, it’s probably best to put those in the waste bin. If you fancy a change, donate items in good, usable condition to your nearest charity shop. Finish decluttering by throwing away overused tea towels and sponges as they are a breeding ground for bacteria.

2. What goes where?

Now that we’ve taken a moment to get rid what we don’t need, let’s look at what goes where in our kitchen cabinets.

Keep your frequently used dishes and glassware somewhere close to your sink or dishwasher. This makes packing away quicker and your guests won’t have to search for long to make a glass of water! Store dishware lower as these cabinets are generally deeper, letting you store more and make the most of your space.

Store pots and pans in lower cabinets closer to your oven and hob, creating a designated cooking zone. Higher cupboards are great for ingredients you find yourself frequently searching for when preparing a cooked meal. Think, spices, tins and loose food such as pasta and rice.

For larger, less frequently used appliances, store them in lower cupboards. This way they won’t gather dust and there is much more room for them.

3. Categorise Your Food

The key to good organisation is being able to see what you have. Unorganised food looks bad, and you may end up wasting money by accidentally re-purchasing what you already have. Group similar items together and put them in a dedicated space. For example, spices on a rack or all your tinned goods on the same shelf.

For loose items, such as rice or pasta, they look great stored in clear, air-tight containers like these. Plus, they stack, making great use of vertical space otherwise left unused!

4. Hang things up!

Hanging up your aprons, tea towels and oven gloves is a simple and easy way to keep your kitchen organised. Not only does it help you find them quickly when you need them, it also helps free up much needed space in your drawers!

Think about unused spaces, the side of a cabinet, the back of your door etc. Command strips are great for a quick fix, or over door hangers suit those who don’t want to lose their deposit!

You can even save space in your drawers by using a wall mounted utensil rack. Something like this is perfect for utilising the space behind your hob.

5. Elevate your space!

While it may feel like you’re struggling for space to put your food shopping, you probably have a lot more underutilised space than you think!

A fantastic way to store food more efficiently is to use shelf risers. Usually inexpensive, shelf risers take advantage of wasted space and can be used in a variety of ways. Stack them on top of each other or just use one to store plates and glasses on the same shelf. The possibilities are endless!

6. Kitchen Hygiene

Part of making a space organised is keeping it clean. With the thousands of cleaning products currently on the market, it can become overwhelming very quickly. You can expect a cupboard full of half used and unopened products that aren’t exactly friends to the environment. Avoid this by exploring natural cleaning solutions that work on a range of messes, ultimately reducing your chemical and plastic waste (they look a lot nicer too!).

To find your washing items, a wheeled sink tidy puts all your cleaning products in one place with easy access. For cleaning products you might reach for more often, a caddy beside your sink or inside a cupboard door are great ideas.

And of course, don’t forget to find a drying rack to sit your draining board. This makes drying quicker, easier and quieter. The Range has a wonderful selection of dish drainers for any style.

7. Lid Racks!

Earlier we had a look at where our pots and pans should go, what should you do with the lids? While they usually end up in a pile at the bottom of our drawers, there are much easier (and aesthetically pleasing!) ways to store them.

You can get pot lid organisers that go directly in your drawer (and are also great for plates and chopping boards), or these in-door lid holders act as a great space saving solution.

8. Control Drawer Chaos

While this might seem obvious, dividing up space in your drawers is essential when maintaining a clean, clutter free kitchen. Even though it may seem tempting just to throw things in a drawer to sort out later, the sooner you get control over what’s inside, the better.

Most homeware stores will sell cutlery trays, just make sure the dimensions are right and choose the correct one for your drawer. You could also group together other cooking essentials (think baking paper and tin foil), and put them in the same drawer. Then you can grab them as needed without turning the kitchen upside down.

9. Kitchen Cart

For those looking to make a bigger change in their kitchen, investing in a kitchen cart is a great idea. Not only are they another place for storage, they can also act as an additional work surface. If you have a lot of empty floor space, they give your kitchen a focal point. Available in a range of sizes and price points, you won’t have a problem finding the perfect companion for your kitchen.

10. What’s Next?

Add the perfect finishing touch to your kitchen organisation with a wall mounted notice board. From magnetic to velvet, these boards make a great home for recipe printouts, reminders and even your house keys. They add character to your kitchen, so add as much as you want and display your individuality!
